Introduce yourself!
P:
Hi! I'm Paulah. I'm from Ann Arbor, Michigan and I will be moving to Atlanta soon for grad school.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
P:
My last relaxer was 4 years ago and I cut off my relaxed ends about 3 years ago. I went natural because my relaxed hair was really thin and short, and I wanted to grow long hair. My group of friends in college all went natural one by one, and I was inspired by how beautiful and healthy their hair looked.

How would you describe your texture?
P:
I'm not too big into hair typing, but I think I am a 4b with some 3c/4a spots in the back. My hair is really coarse and thick, but that's what I love about it.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
P:
I usually do twist outs because they're easy. Sometimes I'll braid the roots and pin them around my head so my hair is more stretched. I use the LOC method for this style using water, coconut oil or JBCO, and Curls Unleashed Curl Defining Crème and Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream (I like to mix products). Lately I've been experimenting with flexi-rods and flat twist outs, which are both amazing. I'm trying to limit the heat styling as much as possible, but occasionally I'll blow dry my roots just to give my hair more "hang". Also I've really gotten into the Greenhouse Effect Method to increase my hair growth. Three times a week I'll give myself a scalp massage with coconut oil and rosemary oil, spray my hair with a little water, put it in loose twists, put a plastic cap over it, and then tie my scarf around the whole thing. My hair is really moisturized in the morning.

What does wash day look like for you?
P:
I've been trying to incorporate more oils into my regimen, so right now I pre-poo overnight with lots of coconut oil and Jamaican black castor oil. Then I wash with As I Am Coconut CoWash (or Pantene Pro-V Shampoo if I need my hair to be squeaky clean for heat styling) and deep condition with Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise and extra virgin olive oil with heat for 2 hours. After I rinse out my deep conditioner and olive oil, I usually spray my hair with a ½ Apple Cider Vinegar ½ water mix, and rinse that out with cold water. That's pretty much it!

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
P:
My hair is starting to get too massive for a normal looking puff, so lately it's been a simple bun at the nape of my neck.

How do you combat shrinkage?
P:
I try to stretch my hair by braiding the roots (I call this a "bristout") and pinning my twists around my head with bobby pins. Occasionally I'll blow-dry my hair on the warm setting, but I hold the ends of my hair to protect them from the heat.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
P:
Recently the ends of my hair were heat damaged and I didn't want to cut them, so I had to be extra gentle and incorporate some protein treatments. I used the Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor. Then I decided that I wanted to stop using heat for a long time and heat damaged ends look horrible with a curly fro, so I went ahead and cut them off. I'm focusing on taking better care of my hair overall, and I'm hoping I can gain that length back fairly quickly.

What are 2 do's for your texture?
P:
Henna Treatments – they make my hair so soft and strong and I retain length better after I do them.

Moisturize and Seal – my hair gets dry very easily if I go more than a day without moisturizing and my ends feel extremely brittle.

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
P:
Using a lot of heat – I'm usually fine if I flat iron my hair once when it's clean, but if I keep applying more heat for touch ups, or curl it during the week, I already know I'm asking for heat damaged ends.

Sleeping without my silk scarf or bonnet on – my hair will definitely be dry and frizzy in the morning.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
P:
Yup! I'm on YouTube at youtube.com/downlikejawn. I'm on Tumblr at superpauladenise.tumblr.com. My Instagram and Twitter are @DownAzzJawn. Follow/Like/Comment/Subscribe – All those things!

7 Beautiful and Easy Natural Hair Styles for a Spring Wedding (Locs ...

Whether you are the bride to be or a member of the bridal party, these beautiful hair styles can be worn on the big day… or to any formal Spring event!

1. Classic Textured Low Bun

You can almost never go wrong with the classic low bun for a Spring wedding. Allow your texture to show while you're at it too. Who says you have to wear straight hair on the wedding day? Watch the above tutorial for step-by-step styling instructions.

2. Textured 3-Strand Twist Updo

Here is another elegant look for a Spring wedding and it is actually easier to achieve than it looks. The texture is achieved with a set of three-strand twists on stretched hair and defining products. She uses a butter and argan oil from Entwine, but that is not mandatory. Also, if you do not know how to three-strand twist, then tight two-strands twists may work out just fine. Grab some bobby pins, get to work, and voilà!

3. Easy-to-do Faux Bun

The textured bun in this tutorial can be done on short hair with the help of Marley braid hair. It is also super simple to create so long as you have enough hair to pull into a ponytail (no matter how short). Check out the video for more details.

4. Fabulous Spring Curls

If you want to rock curls for a Spring wedding, then you may want to try this technique. You will need a curling wand, a setting spraygloss serum and blow-dried hair to begin. Just a bit of warning if you want to rock this look: Make sure there is no rain or serious humidity in the forecast.

5. Twisted Side Bun on Locs

Once again, I don't want to forget about my loc-ed ladies out there. This style is very easy to achieve starting from a set of twisted locs on one side and flat-twisted locs on the other side. Watch the tutorial to see what I mean.

6. Swirly Swoop and Bun on Locs

Now for those with shorter locs, this style — or a variation of it — may be doable. All you will need are some bobby pins, rubber bands, an Ouchless band, and a hair net. Create two side coils and a bun … and you're done!

7. 2-in-1: Chunky Side Flat Twists and Twist Out

naturalneiicey

For this look, you will first create chunky flat twists that fall to one side and then place perm rods on the ends. Don't forget to apply a styling product (e.g., moisturizing butter) beforehand to help with definition and hold. Wear the twists overnight and style the next day.

One option (style #1) is to pin up the flat twists for a super cute side updo. Another option (style #2) is to wear the resulting twist out in a side-swept style.

Ladies, would you wear any of these styles?

Introduce yourself!
J:
My name is Jillaine. I'm American, of Irish, and Jamaican descent. I grew up in both the Bronx, New York and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where I currently reside.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
J:
I've been natural since birth! My mom didn't want to get my hair relaxed. She liked my curls and learned how to work with them. There was a point in time where I didn't like my hair and wanted it relaxed, but then realized it could damage my curls, and I didn't end up going through with it. I really started embracing my curls my sophomore year of high school, back in 2010.

How would you describe your texture?
J:
I would say my hair is predominantly 3c and my curls are very fine. My hair has a mind of its own, which I'm okay with most of the time.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
J:
My styling regimen is really simple actually. I'm a wash and go type of gal. I wash my hair every 2-4 days. After washing it, I separate my hair into two sections and apply Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner/Detangler and One 'n Only Argan Oil Treatment. I have yet to really experiment with different hairstyles because for one I'm lazy, and I'm also really happy with the way my hair falls most of the time after washing, so I find no need to play around with it. So my hair is either down in its natural state, or up in a bun/ponytail. I try to deep condition every two weeks as well, and when I do I use Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque.

What does wash day look like for you?
J:
My wash days are also pretty simple. As mentioned earlier, I wash my hair every 2-4 days. I hop in the shower, soak my hair in the water, then lather my head with shampoo. I use the DevaCurl No-Poo, which I love. I let that sit for a few minutes, then wash it out. I then separate my hair into two sections and take two pumps of my DevaCurl One Condition and start working on one side of my head. I use the Revlon Signature Series Paddle Hair brush to brush out each section of my hair, starting from the bottom working my way up. Once I finish conditioning and brushing my hair out, I let the conditioner sit for a few minutes then wash it out.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
J:
I just let my hair do its thing! If I've just washed it I'll let it air dry or diffuse it really quick. If it's one of the in-between days, I just wake up, fluff my hair a bit, then run out.

How do you combat shrinkage?
J:
Honestly, it doesn't bother me, so I don't really do anything if I'm being honest. I recently just cut off a lot of hair (impulse decision that I should've thought through more) so I'm noticing the shrinkage a lot more now. I live in a climate where the humidity is always extremely high, so I know my hair is going to shrink and frizz – it's inevitable. I don't mind it. The combination of shrinkage and frizz makes my hair look really voluminous, which I love.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
J:
The hair that's on the very top of my head. That hair is always directly in the sun, and it is noticeably drier and harder to deal with than the hair underneath.

What are 2 do's for your texture?
J:
I would say to make sure you detangle when your hair is sopping wet and lathered in conditioner, and make sure it's nice and moisturized on the regular!

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
J:
I try to not use heat that often, as that can really damage/dry your hair out, and I make sure to avoid to the best of my ability any products that contain sulfate.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

Day2WnG

Introduce yourself!
K:
Hi Curlies, my name is Kara and I am from London!

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
K:
I have been natural since birth, but after endless run-ins with bad hairdressers and incompetent advice, I turned to the gurus of natural hair on YouTube in 2009. When my hair was straight, it measured at ear length! There is nothing wrong with that if that is what you desire, but I was trying to grow my hair. I didn't want 3 inches cut off each time I visited the hairdresser!

How would you describe your texture?
K:
I would describe my texture as being predominantly 4a. I know that there are constant disputes over hair typing, but I think it is an effective way of describing a texture. It is useful in finding other naturals with the same hair type through using a common known language. When I am searching for anything to do with my texture of hair, I type 4a, as I want to know what the best products are. That, and advice from other 4a naturals. I believe my strands are fine and medium in density. I would say my hair isn't thick, but it is plentiful – if that makes sense?

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
K:
My styling regimen is super duper easy and twists are my go to hairstyle. Small twists, medium twists, fat twists I love them all! If my hair isn't in twists, it is usually in a protective style. Both styling options have contributed to my length retention so that is why I do them. Also, I have two kids, a full time job and a hubby, so you know…I ain't got time for dat! When styling my hair I have to make it quick and easy, but presentable.

Products I use to style my hair, but not all at once are: Darcy's Botanicals Shea Butter Curl Moisturizing Cream, Aloe Vera Gel, and Komaza Care Califia Styling Pudding.

What does wash day look like for you?
K:
As my hair has grown a lot, I have had to modify my wash day regimen, so there has been quite a bit of trial and error recently, but I think I may have finally cracked it. At the moment I am dry deep conditioning with Bee Mine Avocado Cream Balanced Conditioner, and I add my own oil mixture to this. After this has been on my hair for about an hour, I'll jump in the shower and rinse my hair, then cleanse. To cleanse I use Burt's Bees More Moisture Shampoo with Baobab. After rinsing the shampoo, I finger detangle my hair in sections using Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner. I am switching between that and Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner.

Once all of my hair has been thoroughly detangled and is all twisted up in sections, I rinse all of the conditioner out with the twists in. I wrap my hair in a t-shirt and leave that on for about 20 minutes, so my hair is damp when I go to moisturise after washing. I then add my leave in, Kinky Curly Knot Today, and apply Darcy's Botanicals Shea Butter Curl Moisturizing Cream together with my own oil mixture on top of that. I lastly style into twists. This routine can last up to 3 hours.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
K:
When I do not have a lot of time on my hands and my hair is loose (not in twists) I often go for a protective, elegant, low bun look. It is so easy to do I even surprise myself.

How do you combat shrinkage?
K:
I combat shrinkage by keeping my hair stretched when I am washing my hair, i.e. having my hair in twists or plaits whilst washing, and after detangling re-twisting or plaiting. Personally I like shrinkage, and it works really well with most styling options.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
K:
At the moment my problem area is my temples due to postnatal shedding. That hair is shorter than the rest and it sticks out, so that can be really annoying.

What are 2 do's for your texture?
K:
Moisturise regularly and Detangle with care.

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
K:
Personally I don't leave my hair in loose styles often because I cannot deal with the aftermath. I also don't use heat often, but that is just my personal preference.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
K:
Most definitely – You can find me at www.naturalcurlies.com, YouTube: Naturalcurliestv, Facebook: Natural Curlies, and on Twitter and Instagram @NaturalCurlies, so yes I'm very social!
