In this blog I will share three easy-livin summertime options for natural hair. No matter which option you choose make sure you give your hair extra moisture by applying water or water based moisturizers and consider purchasing a sunscreen for both your hair and skin.

Option 1: Just Add Water- The Wash and Go

The wash and go is not for everyone. However, if you are able to achieve it, the wash and go is quick, easy and perfect for summer. Because this style starts with wet hair it is perfectly cool for those scorching hot days. Take along a small spray bottle filled with plain water or a mixture of oils or glycerin to refresh your look throughout the day. Frequent misting will keep both your hair and skin well hydrated and looking fresh.

Consider the wash and go when planning a trip to the Water Park or pool as water will only make this style better.



Option 2: Go Incognito-Summer Hats

Hats are not just for bad hair days or hiding from the paparazzi. Big straw hats are a chic summer classic and can protect both your hair and skin from the effects of UV rays. Choose a hat with an extra wide brim for maximum protection and style.



Option 3: Mermaid It-Braided

Braids are almost synonymous with summer. From cornrows to individuals and fishtails, braids are not only stylish and easy to wear but they give your hair a chance to take a vacation from styling and manipulation. Hair can be easily washed, conditioned and moisturized to remove sand and sweat without disturbing the style. Another plus is that braiding can bring even the wildest fro into submission so you can wear a hat or cap. Be careful with braids; make sure they are not too tight especially around the edges.

Hope I Look this Good at 70!

Almost 3 Years ago, my grandmother, Jen, unintentionally went natural. For years, she would sit at the edge of her bed with grease, a wide tooth comb and magnetic rollers. She would roll her relaxed, ginger-colored hair in perfectly uniformed sections and place a silk scarf over her head. In the morning, she would unroll her hair and shape her cropped cut. This nightly ritual and her short crop were her staples as she conquered the real estate industry.

Today, she is retired, living a holistic life, using herbal remedies and an exercise regimen to stay fit. Since she spends most of her days doing community service and thrifting, she has little time to deal with the rigors of at home hair care. She began wearing a series of protective braided and weaved styles. She stopped getting relaxers and started taking multivitamins for hair and nails.

At 67 she began transitioning, trimming off a little bit of relaxed hair each time she changed protective styles. She was skeptical of how natural hair would look on her. However, today, she is 100% sold! She says, "Making a few changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference." After spending nearly 3 years in protective styles and caring for her hair in-between each style, Jen was finally able to take a good look at her hair for the first time last week!



She only co-washes, and uses aloe juice to moisturize her hair underneath her protective styles. She uses protein-based deep conditioners in between styles. She also avoids heat and drinks plenty of water daily.

D: My name is Débora, I'm 23 years old and I'm from São Paulo/Brazil.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
D: I've been natural since 2012. I started my transition in July 2012 and continued for 14 months, until just after my wedding on August 18, 2013. I didn't wanna have short hair. I had dreamed of wearing a big bun or a topknot! So I waited from July 2012 to September 2013 (one month after my wedding) to do the BIG CHOP. It was 14 months of pure anxiety!

I decided to return to natural hair first of all because I was very tired of burning my scalp, and second because I didn't know my own hair. My mom started relaxing my hair when I was only 7 years old. So since this age, I have always retouched my roots. I thought that doing this was normal. I didn't see anybody with natural hair. Nobody said to me that natural hair is beautiful. So after 15 years of torture and low esteem I discovered on the internet a lot of BEAUTIFUL girls with natural hair! They shared their journey, tips, natural hairstyles, words of confidence…so this got my attention. From there, I started my own natural hair journey.

How would you describe your texture?
D: I would describe it as 4A! It's very coily and the curl pattern is like an "S". But the curls are looser in the back of my head and the top (crown) is more porous and dry.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
D: I wash my hair no more than twice per week then just wait for it to dry naturally. I don't have a styling regimen as of yet since this will be my first year with all my hair natural. I'm discovering this month (fall/winter) that protective styles are very good. So I'm trying this, but most of the time I wear a wash and and go, puff, side puff or mohican.



What does wash day look like for you?
D: The wash day for me is very simple. I don't do anything different. Since January I've been using Head and Shoulders Shampoo with Eucalyptus, Palmolive Cachos Control with Aloe, Pantene, and Dove Shampoo. After washing I use my favorite conditioner from Skala Jaborandi to moisturize and help detangle. I detangle my hair with my fingers, and only detangle on wash day. After doing this, depending on the day, I just apply a leave-in like Capicilin Volume Reducer that is similar to flaxseed gel, Seda Keraforce Original Curl Activator, or I moisturize my hair with Seda Keraforce Original Treatment Cream or a homemade moisturizer with cornstarch, natural oils and cream. This product regimen changes once per month. Sometimes I change the leave-in or the moisturizer, but most of time I like to use homemade recipes.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
D: When I don't have too much time or when my hair isn't in a good mood, I wear a puff or a side puff.

How do you combat shrinkage?
D: This is something that I definitely don't worry about.

Tell us about your hair color?
D: My natural color is dark brown, but I did some blond highlights. I went to a professional. She blew out my hair then put on a highlighting cap. The color didn't change my hair texture, but to prevent any dryness I moisturize more than usual.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
D: I take extra care in my crown area because it is very dry. I always apply more cream and oils in this part, and I try to define the curls in this area with my fingers.

What are 2 do's for your texture?
D: Moisturizing and finger detangling.

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
D: Anything that has a very high temperature like a flat iron, and don't sleep with wet hair!

L: I've been natural all of my life. My mother dreaded my hair at the age of three. This is my third set of dreads. How would you describe your texture? L: My hair texture is considered 4a. I have very thick hair and my dreads allow my hair to be more manageable. What method was used to start your locs? L: I started my hair in two strand twists and left them in so my hair could lock. I'm unsure of how many I have. How do you style your locs? L: I use Cantu Shea Butter products to style my hair. I normally re-twist about once a month and I wash every few weeks. When I have the time, I curl it or I braid it to make my hair wavy and to add body. Curling can be very time consuming, so I normally just re-twist, wash, and braid. When I'm in a time crunch I usually just put a hair tie in my dreads and tie them back. What does wash day look like for you? L: Depending on how I'm feeling, I either use Pantene Shampoo for Women of Color or Creme of Nature Shampoo for a wash. I also use Pantene Conditioner for Women of Color. It works wonders on my hair. Tell us about your hair color? L: My hair is naturally black with brown highlights. I got it professionally highlighted at a hair salon. What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention? L: I've been blessed to have a pretty easygoing hair experience overall, however sometimes it can be hard to moisturize the scalp when you have dreads. What are 2 do's for your locs? L: Always make sure your hair is moisturized. This is a definite MUST. Also, allow your hair to just breathe. Meaning try not to braid it too frequently, as it will weaken your locs. What are 2 don'ts for your locs? L: Don't re-twist your hair too often!!! It will also weaken your hair. And if you're going to dye it, make sure to only do it annually. CBC Reps Discuss Meeting With Paul Ryan and Army <b>Natural Hair</b> <b>...</b> Posted: 01 May 2014 01:18 PM PDT Congresswomen Sheila Jackson Lee and Gwen Moore are two of 17 women in the Congressional Black Caucus. When news broke recently that the Pentagon was tightening restrictions on hairstyles for female soldiers, most pertaining to natural styles worn commonly by black women, the representatives stepped up and have asked military officials to rethink their new standards. "I've had a natural or braids for a good part of my life and I see nothing wrong with any of the styles mentioned," said Jackson Lee. The new regulations are now under review but both women agree that a review isn't enough. They want an end to the policing of black women's hair. L: My name is Lexi Marcel Jackson. I'm 19, from Los Angeles, California, and I am African American and Mexican.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?

L: I have been natural all my life. When I was younger I really wanted a relaxer but my mom would never allow me to get one.

How would you describe your texture?

L: Overall, I would say that my hair texture/curl pattern is 3b. In the center of my head, I do not have a defined curl pattern, which is more 3c, and my hair is extremely thick and coarse. Up until recently, I would have described my hair as unmanageable. I have since found products that work well, and make my hair a lot easier to manage!

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.

L: My styling regimen is always changing, but I do have a few staples that I could not live without! I style my hair with product after a fresh wash. After washing, I apply Virgin Coconut Oil to the bottom half of my hair. Then I use leave in conditioners, Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioning Cream and Kinky Curly Knot Today. Since Kinky Curly is a bit pricey and I have so much hair, I put some in a spray bottle to dilute it with water, and it still gets the job done! After that, I style with Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream or Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. If I need a lot of hold I will add Herbal Essences Set Me Up Mousse.

What does wash day look like for you?

L: I wash my hair about 2 times a week if I am wearing it curly. My scalp is very sensitive, and over time it gets build up from the products I use. Generally I apply Apple Cider Vinegar to my roots 15 minutes before washing my hair to cleanse and condition my scalp. If I have a lot of build up I will go ahead and use Shea Moisture's Curl & Shine Shampoo instead. Next I use any drugstore conditioner, but at the moment Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deeep Conditioner is my favorite. I then detangle and leave the conditioner in my hair for about 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water to reduce frizz.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.

L: If I am in a rush and do not have a lot of time, I spray my hair with my Kinky Curly Knot Today /water mixture, and braid my hair allowing my frizzy curls to fall out around my face. My go to used to be a big bun at the top of my head, but since my hair is so thick and heavy, my roots began to break off around the crown of my head.

How do you combat shrinkage? L: Shrinkage is not an issue for me. My focus is on defining my curls, which scrunching my hair and defusing with a blow dryer helps me to achieve.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?

L: Since my hair is so thick, I tend to get huge knots in the back of my head. The hair in the back rubs against my clothes and neck, which can create a huge problem. Another problem area I have is in the middle of my head, where I have no defined curl pattern, just frizzy waves. To combat both of these issues I just apply more leave in conditioners when styling, and more conditioner to those areas when washing.

What are 2 do's for your texture?

L: 1. Moisture! My hair can dry out very quickly. I use deep conditioning hair treatments from time to time to prevent breakage. 2) Wide tooth comb! I cannot detangle with anything else!

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?

L: 1. Damaging hair routines! Such as flat ironing, dyeing, blow drying etc… 2. Combing from the root to tips. I always detangle from the bottom of my hair, working my way to the roots of my hair.

(U.S. Army image) In North Korea, women are legally restricted to choose from 28 government-approved hairstyles. Black women in the U.S. Army may have less flexibility according to those who allege new "grooming regulations" are "racially biased." Army Regulation 670-1, released Monday, specifies what haircuts, tattoos and clothing are acceptable for the 570,000 soldiers currently enlisted. Men probably consider changes in tattoo policy the most drastic, but it is changes to female fashion that have women's hair in an unapproved twist. Dreadlocks and twists have been prohibited since 2005, The Army Times reports, but the new regulation specifically bans styles popular with black women. A soldier from Atlanta, Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs, who wears her hair in two twists, has started a White House petition to get the changes thrown out. "I've been in the military six years, I've had my hair natural four years, and it's never been out of regulation. It's never interfered with my head gear," she said in The Army Times. "[I am] kind of at a loss now with what to do with my hair." Almost 10,000 people have signed the petition. A total of 100,000 must sign for a White House response. A male who has probably has had the same haircut since his mom quit cutting it said the new rules are "necessary to maintain uniformity within a military population." "Many hairstyles are acceptable, as long as they are neat and conservative," said regulation-spouting Army spokesman Paul Prince. I'm hoping this gets sorted out quickly. 3 Popular <b>Natural Hair Styles</b> That Don&#39;t Work For Me | <b>Black</b> Girl <b>...</b> Posted: 13 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT Do you remember back in the 1990s when it was en vogue for young women to wear over-sized male clothing? Popular singing group, TLC managed to do so while appearing crazy, sexy and cool. Some of us (points to myself) didn't do such a great job imitating the look i.e. wearing our mothers tapered legs jeans (yes, mom jeans) and our father's discarded Charter Club work shirts. Not everything is for everybody, and when it comes to hair, this nuance couldn't be more true. One thing that I've learned over the course of my hair journey is the fact that no one (not even the vloggers with lusciously thick, long hair) has "perfect" hair. Some styles and methods simply don't work and I want to encourage those of you who may be in the early stages of your hair journey. Even when you have waist length coils and curls like I do, your hair still may not "act right" and that's just fine. Roller sets When I had relaxed hair I wore roller sets countless times, so I thought I would have no problem wearing this style once my hair was natural. In general, roller sets are preferable to direct heat methods, such as flat irons or blow drying because you place less heat stress on your hair. Therefore, I was  pretty disappointed when I realized that after over an hour of roller setting my natural hair then 2 hours of drying, my hair looked like the aftermath of completing a Taebo workout in a wind storm. Some sections were straight, some curled, while some of my hair managed to remain in tight coils. I would love the Joan-from-Girlfriends bouncy and full roller set, but alas it doesn't work for me. If I want to achieve that look I have blow dry my hair, then roller set, which essentially defeats the purpose of avoiding direct heat. Wash n'Gos Style Icon Breanna There was a time when I would simply say this style didn't work for my hair because of the nature of my hair texture. However, two years ago, I sampled a product that allowed me to achieve a pretty decent wash n'go. The problem was that in order to subdue my thick hair into coils and curls I had to painstakingly apply the thick product to every section of my hair. To me, if a wash n' go requires an hour just to apply the product, then another 30 minutes to diffuse the hair, the purpose of the style is lost. Moreover, my hair was so coated with product that I knew that after a day or two my hair would be dry and brittle and require a thorough cleanse so that my hair could be properly moisturized.  Just because I can achieve a style doesn't mean it necessarily works for my hair. If the health of my hair is compromised in the process of styling, then ultimately the style is a hair fail. Twist Outs I have a love-hate relationship with twist outs. On the rare occasion when I wear mini twists (it takes about 12 hours to twist my hair), I absolutely LOVE the resulting twist out that I have after a few weeks. The traditional twist out, usually styled with 20-40 twists, on the other hand, has never lived up to its hype for me. While my braid outs are defined, my twist outs often seem frizzy and last for only a few hours. Recently, however, I decided to wear what I felt was a rather failed attempt at a twist out because I wasn't in the mood to care. To my great surprise a few women complimented my hair. So perhaps, there are a few healthy styling hair fails that are only viewed as unsuccessful because they don't meet my high standards. That's probably the same for you.
