L: My name is Lexi Marcel Jackson. I'm 19, from Los Angeles, California, and I am African American and Mexican.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?

L: I have been natural all my life. When I was younger I really wanted a relaxer but my mom would never allow me to get one.

How would you describe your texture?

L: Overall, I would say that my hair texture/curl pattern is 3b. In the center of my head, I do not have a defined curl pattern, which is more 3c, and my hair is extremely thick and coarse. Up until recently, I would have described my hair as unmanageable. I have since found products that work well, and make my hair a lot easier to manage!

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.

L: My styling regimen is always changing, but I do have a few staples that I could not live without! I style my hair with product after a fresh wash. After washing, I apply Virgin Coconut Oil to the bottom half of my hair. Then I use leave in conditioners, Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioning Cream and Kinky Curly Knot Today. Since Kinky Curly is a bit pricey and I have so much hair, I put some in a spray bottle to dilute it with water, and it still gets the job done! After that, I style with Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream or Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. If I need a lot of hold I will add Herbal Essences Set Me Up Mousse.

What does wash day look like for you?

L: I wash my hair about 2 times a week if I am wearing it curly. My scalp is very sensitive, and over time it gets build up from the products I use. Generally I apply Apple Cider Vinegar to my roots 15 minutes before washing my hair to cleanse and condition my scalp. If I have a lot of build up I will go ahead and use Shea Moisture's Curl & Shine Shampoo instead. Next I use any drugstore conditioner, but at the moment Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deeep Conditioner is my favorite. I then detangle and leave the conditioner in my hair for about 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water to reduce frizz.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.

L: If I am in a rush and do not have a lot of time, I spray my hair with my Kinky Curly Knot Today /water mixture, and braid my hair allowing my frizzy curls to fall out around my face. My go to used to be a big bun at the top of my head, but since my hair is so thick and heavy, my roots began to break off around the crown of my head.

How do you combat shrinkage? L: Shrinkage is not an issue for me. My focus is on defining my curls, which scrunching my hair and defusing with a blow dryer helps me to achieve.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?

L: Since my hair is so thick, I tend to get huge knots in the back of my head. The hair in the back rubs against my clothes and neck, which can create a huge problem. Another problem area I have is in the middle of my head, where I have no defined curl pattern, just frizzy waves. To combat both of these issues I just apply more leave in conditioners when styling, and more conditioner to those areas when washing.

What are 2 do's for your texture?

L: 1. Moisture! My hair can dry out very quickly. I use deep conditioning hair treatments from time to time to prevent breakage. 2) Wide tooth comb! I cannot detangle with anything else!

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?

L: 1. Damaging hair routines! Such as flat ironing, dyeing, blow drying etc… 2. Combing from the root to tips. I always detangle from the bottom of my hair, working my way to the roots of my hair.

The Army Times reports that of the signatures collected, thousands are from soldiers who are unhappy with the Army's new grooming standards. At issue are the Army's changes to Army Regulation 670-1, which bans twists and multiple braids larger than a quarter in diameter. Locs are not allowed at all and cornrows are strictly regulated. According to Army spokesman Paul Prince, locs and twists have always been banned, so the U.S. Army's new guidelines just provide soldiers with guidance. The regulations also show pictures of banned hairstyles, many of which are of Black women. "I've been in the military six years, I've had my hair natural four years, and it's never been out of regulation. It's never interfered with my head gear," Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs, of the Georgia National Guard, who wears her hair in two twists, told the Army Times. Jacobs says because of the new regulations, she's "at a loss" over what to do with her hair. Her sentiment makes sense because the Army's current regulations, by banning both locs and twists, are banning Black women from wearing most natural hairstyles. With these regulations in place, the only natural style available to women of color are a short afro or fade. "Most Black women, their hair doesn't grow straight down, it grows out," said Jacobs, who started the White House petition. "I'm disappointed to see the Army, rather than inform themselves on how black people wear their hair, they've white-washed it all." "Females with natural hair take strides to style their natural hair in a professional manner when necessary; however, changes to AR 670-1 offer little to no options for females with natural hair," wrote Jacobs in the White House petition. For now, Jacobs says she'll wear a wig because she refuses to relax her hair.

New Regulation on <b>Black Female Hairstyles</b> in the Army | Beauty High Posted: 02 Apr 2014 09:45 AM PDT This week, an update to Army Regulation 670-1 (which is a guide to hairstyles that are and are not permitted in the army) banned certain hairstyles for African American female soldiers. Besides a ban on dreadlocks, the update also states that braids more than a quarter of an inch in diameter and twists are now unauthorized. While the regulations are put in place to ensure that headgear properly fits and so that the soldiers look neat and conservative, the new update raises a few questions. Twists and dreadlocks have been banned since 2005, but only with the latest regulations were certain hairstyles noted. For the female African American soldiers who have been serving for years, the regulation is particularly unsettling. "I've been in the military six years, I've had my hair natural four years, and it's never been out of regulation. It's never interfered with my head gear," Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs, of the Georgia National Guard, who wears her hair in two twists, told the Army Times.  MORE: 12 Problems Only Girls With Natural Hair Understand Jacobs started a White House petition this week opposing the updates to Regulation 670-1, which already has over 6,000 signatures. Why is the US Army Biased Against <b>African-American Women&#39;s Hair</b>? Posted: 11 Apr 2014 02:30 PM PDT In the early 1970s, the women's liberation movement was in full swing. Activists focused on giving women freedom to choose their own paths and have equal access to opportunities traditionally reserved for men. One of the major battlegrounds was corporate America where women fought to go past the reception desk and into the corner office.  As the corporate culture changed, so did the idea of what was considered professional behavior. Men still dominated the board room and, ultimately, the employee manual. When it came to what to wear, women were forced to emulate the male style, but still dress as men felt women should. Suits were generally of the typical gray, black, or blue colors. Women would be required to wear skirts – below the knee – and shoes that were appropriate in heel height. Makeup had to be "natural" and hair had to be done in a conservative manner, which generally meant pulled into a bun or otherwise not worn below the shoulders. In the decades since, more women are in the boardroom and corporate culture has adjusted accordingly. Women wear suits, dresses and pants with vivid colors. They are tailored to fit their body and the shoes are fabulous. However, as the workplace has become more diverse, conservative work environments have still been slow to adjust to the needs of many women – especially women of color. Last month, the U.S. Army released its latest appearance guidelines. Like all organizations, the military has rules as to grooming and uniform. Soldiers must always maintain a professional appearance while on duty. Guidelines cover everything from uniform to jewelry – including piercings, tattoos, and hairstyles. The new guidelines on hairstyles have created an uproar that has been heard all the way to the halls of Congress. The updated regulations have specified which hairstyles, for women and men, are authorized. The banned styles are predominately worn by African-American women, especially those that do not choose to chemically alter their natural hair. Furthermore, the accepted styles would be difficult for black women with natural hair to maintain, especially when deployed in areas that lack the modern conveniences, and time, needed to be considered regulation. Black hair is naturally curly and the texture varies. Generally, however, the hair grows up and out, not down as straight hair does. For hair that has a courser texture and a tighter curl, sometimes referred to "kinky," it requires a great deal of effort and varied techniques to maintain when not altered chemically or thermally. As a result, many black women choose hairstyles that can be worn for longer periods of time, such as twists, braids or cornrows. These are especially useful for black female soldiers that are deployed in war zones or in the field for extended periods of times. These are also the styles that have been modified or banned by the Army. While the updated regulations apply to all women, many seem to ignore the unique challenges for black hair. Female soldiers cannot wear hairstyles that are longer than the bottom edge of the collar than their uniform and it must be of a uniform length.  Essentially, women with long hair will need to pull their hair into a bun, which must be secured, not extend further than three inches from the scalp, and not lopsided. It also has to be secured with an authorized accessory, which means that huge hairclips are not allowed and scrunchies must match the soldier's hair color. While all of this seems reasonable, considering the needs of the required headgear, a lot of this is not easy to comply with for black women. Curls that are thick and tight do not pull easily into a bun or stay in place without altering the natural state of the hair. The new regulation requiring only two braids and that they lay flat would be impossible for anyone with thick hair, especially if it doesn't naturally lay flat. While cornrows are still allowed, they must be small and start from the front of the scalp, a style that isn't easy to achieve without the help of someone else. Black female soldiers are speaking out against the regulations, claiming that the standards are racially biased and ignore the complexities of black hair. While they agree that soldiers need to maintain a professional appearance, the new regulations are forcing a definition of professionalism that excludes black women. As one soldier noted on the Facebook page of the Sgt. Major of the Army, "As far as the twists, that really limits females with curly/kinky hair. I can't simply pull my hair back due to excessive knotting. I proudly wear twists in a professional manner every day and only took them down on the weekends. It makes it very difficult for ethnic females." The issue is not unique to the Army. Studies have shown that black people who do not look a certain way are often ignored for promotions, if they are hired at all. While things like a blue mohawk (which is also banned by the Army, by the way) is generally considered unprofessional, the hairstyle is a choice and one that doesn't occur naturally. For black women that wear their hair in a natural state and appropriately groomed, it is still considered unprofessional. This creates an environment where talent is being ignored simply because of outdated standards of professionalism, which are based on the ideals of white men. Black lawmakers in Congress have called on Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to reconsider the guidelines. There is also a petition to the White House started by National Guard member Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs in hopes of having them address the issue. There is also a Care2 petition here.
