Introduce yourself!
T: Tann Parker, raised in California, residing in Brooklyn.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
T: The reason I started to wear my hair in its natural texture isn't this moving, inspirational story… my blower dryer broke and I couldn't do my normal hair regimen. I decided to try out wearing my hair natural and have been since May 18, 2012.

How would you describe your texture?
T: My hair is about 3c/4a. It can be a lot to deal with at times. I've always had a lot of hair, so detangling is the longest process. It does make it a lot easier with my hair being finer, or else detangling would be a nightmare. I am prone to shrinkage a lot quicker though, which means I have to always re-stretch before going to bed.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
T: When I first started out wearing my hair natural I was a lot more experimental with my styling because I needed to find what worked best for me, but now I'm a lot busier with school and work, so I need something fast. Now my styling regimen is braiding my hair before bed and letting it out before I leave the house. This way I don't need to use as many products in my hair, just something to moisturize every other day. Coconut oil is a very good friend of mine!

What does wash day look like for you?
T: I wash my hair every other two weeks with a couple of wash methods. I have my co-wash, where I just wet my hair fully and put in leave-in conditioner after, my full wash day, which is where I will use shampoo, and I am excited to share that I will be testing out an Apple Cider Vinegar wash very soon!

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
T: I will always live and breath by the braid out. If I wanna get fancy I will pull out the bantu knots.

How do you combat shrinkage?
T: We are still in a battle and it keeps getting the upper hand on me. But I can restore my length by doing a nice tight braid out at night.

Tell us about your hair color?
T: I do dye my own hair and will continue to do so, but I have switched to a dye that works better with natural hair. I now use the Shea Moisture line of dyes. Previously I was a steady user of SoftSheen-Carson. I went from 'Vivacious Red' to "Red Hot Rhythm'. Using that hair dye I felt a layer of coating on my hair that weighted it down. I could only do it about twice a year.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
T: I've always had dandruff, so keeping my hair moisturized is key. Also, detangling is always hard work that I must spend a couple of hours doing if I want to get my hair 100% detangled…(and that has only been done once on account of I was getting my hair done in twists).

What are 2 do's for your texture?
T: DO always braid or twist hair every night. DO not overuse hair products.

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
T: DON'T sleep on hair without anything protecting it. You can wake up from a nap lookin all kinds of crazy with a lopsided fro! DON'T let people touch the fro…there could be loose shed hairs in there and it will be awkward when they end up in the other person's hand…

M: My name is Mariah Peart and I am from Brunswick, GA.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M: I returned to natural because at the age of 14 years old I wasn't taking care of my hair very well. One day my mom was styling my hair and she simply told me not to put any more perms in my hair. She knew my hair better than I did! I transitioned for a year and 5 months (Sept. 2006 – Feb. 2008). I've been completely natural for 6 years and 2 months (Post Big Chop).

How would you describe your texture?
M: The texture of my hair is a mixture of 3c and 4a. My hair contains curls, coils, and kinks. It is thick, but it is not coarse.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
M: As for my styling regimen, I usually style my hair once a week and allow that style to last for the week. I mostly style my hair in twists or twist outs (my favorite). The products I use for styling are Paul Mitchell Original The Conditioner (leave-in conditioner), Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel or the Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel.

What does wash day look like for you?
M: My typical wash day consists of: co-washing with Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner, a light protein treatment (when it is time for one) with Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor and a deep conditioning with Tresemmé Flawless Curls Curl Hydration Conditioner and an oil. Depending on the season, coconut oil (Spring and Summer) or African Pride Olive Miracle Growth Oil (Fall and Winter).

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don't have a lot of time to style.
M: My favorite go-to hairstyle when I don't have much time to style is a simple, easy bun.

How do you combat shrinkage?
M: I combat shrinkage by styling my hair with oil-based products (such as twisting butters, shea butter, etc.). This allows my hair to elongate rather than shrink.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
M: The hair on my temples tends to be my problem area because it is the most sensitive and driest of all other parts of my hair. So, I have to apply more product (conditioners, oils, moisturizers, protein treatments) on those areas of my hair for more hydration. I also have to be more gentle when I have to detangle in those areas as well.

What are 2 do's for your texture?
M: Moisture is important, so applying medium consistency products, conditioner and water are great for my texture. Also, detangling once a week is important as well!

What are 2 don'ts for your texture?
M: Applying heavy products are not good, and never allow styles such as wash and go's to go for more than 3 days, or the hair will tend to have unnecessary tangles and knots.

In a controversial new regulation characterized as discriminatory, the Army has banned common black hairstyles popular with African-American women, including large cornrows, dreadlocks and twists. The 16 women of the Congressional Black Caucus have asked Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to overturn the new directive on behalf of the 26,700 black women who are active duty in the Army. Another new Army rule bans tattoos on neck, face, lower arms, hands, and fingers of recruits.

The new hair regulations, whose goal is to make clear the professional look of soldiers, requires that hair be of "uniform dimension, small in diameter (approximately one-four inch), show no more than one-eighth (inch) of the scalp between the braids." Also banned are dreadlocks, including "unkempt" or "matted" braids and cornrows. It is the words "unkempt" and "matted" that indicate racial bias to some African-Americans, as it indicates a lack of understanding of the characteristics of natural, black hair.

Imani Perry, a Princeton University African-American studies professor, states that although it is reasonable for the military to expect some amount of neatness and conformity in hairstyles, those expectations should consider the wide range of natural hair textures that people have. Common black hairstyles such as cornrow braids and dreadlocks are the easiest grooming options for many black women with tightly curly or kinky hair. He goes on to say that female black soldiers are put in a difficult position by the new hair requirements, which are both racially biased and unfair.

Critics say the new regulations are among grooming standards intended to help reduce the size of the army from 570,000 to 420,000. Loren B. Thompson, a Lexington Institute military expert says that during wartime there is a tendency to allow more variation in personal style simply because there are more important things to worry about.

The rules on tattoos are also criticized, especially since they have become popular among soldiers who are deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, but it is the Army's ban on common black hairstyles such as cornrows and twists that have raised charges of racism. More than 17,000 people have signed an online petition to the White House, asking that the hair regulations be overturned.

In addition to a lack of understanding of the characteristics of black hair, critics say that the regulation uses the hair of white women as its baseline, which rules out common black hairstyles. The texture of black hair, much of which is very curly, makes it difficult to meet the regulations unless it is chemically straightened, a particular problem when the women are deployed since the hair products necessary to maintain straightened hair are expensive and difficult to get, especially in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs, the woman who started the petition to the White House, says she was deployed to Iraq in 2008 and 2009 with a woman who had to keep redoing her cornrows to keep them neat enough to meet the current Army regulations. She says the woman's hairline had receded an inch by the time they returned to the states.

The Army insists that the new regulations were cleared by a focus group that included black women. An Army spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Alayne P. Conway, says that the new female hair standards were developed with the involvement of African-American female soldiers. The Army's senior female soldiers involved in the decision-making process banning cornrows, twists, and other common black hairstyles were considered a representative sample of Army populations.

The Pentagon is reviewing its hairstyle regulations for black women after the Congressional Black Caucus complained the Army had unfairly singled them out in new rules on soldiers' appearances.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel sent a letter Tuesday to caucus chair Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) and other members assuring them that no one in the Pentagon meant to "discriminate or disparage" black women in formulating the Army's new rules.

Fudge thanked him for his quick response.

"Secretary Hagel has committed to careful review of each service's language and grooming policies to ensure both are clear of offensive language and are respectful of the diversity within our armed forces," she wrote. "The secretary's response affirms his commitment to ensuring all individuals are welcomed and can continue to be proud of serving within our armed forces."

Hagel's exchange with the black lawmakers followed a ceremony in the Pentagon on Monday in which he, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and many other Defense Department leaders signed its new "Human Goals Charter." The document, which included major updates, including the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on open service by gays and lesbians, is a full-length statement of how the Pentagon affirms that "people are its most important resource."

African Americans make up more than 16 percent of the total military force, according to Pentagon records. About 16 percent of its overall troop population is female.

Hagel's review also will get rolling as the Army continues its withdrawal from the long war in Afghanistan. To prepare for a return to garrison life, commanders are tightening restrictions on personal appearances, including tattoos and hairstyles. The Army has barred sleeve-style tattoos, for example, and what it called "fancy-style" haircuts for men, including the "tear drop," the "landing strip" or "Mohawk," and "horseshoe."

Some examples of new rules for women include allowing bangs — so long as they don't fall below the eyebrows — and pony tails, as long as they are "centered on the back of the head." Extensions and wigs are authorized, the Army said, if they conform to the other standards and have the same appearance as natural hair.

What Fudge and her colleagues objected to was the way the Army's rules described the way black women may and may not wear their hair.

"The use of words like 'unkempt' and 'matted,' when referring to traditional hairstyles worn by women of color are offensive and biased," Fudge and her colleagues told Hagel this month. "The assumption that individuals wearing these hairstyles cannot maintain them in a way that meets the professionalism of the Army standards indicates a lack of cultural sensitivity conducive to creating a tolerant environment for minorities."

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby told reporters Tuesday that Hagel has ordered the military services to review their appearance regulations for black women and be sure their "standards are fair and respectful to our diverse force while also meeting our requirements."
